Engine Repair

“My engine is making a noise it never made before.”

8:30 AM–6:00 PM, seven days a week 8632 Edgeworth Dr, Capitol Heights, MD 20743

What You May Be Noticing

Engine problems rarely start dramatically. It is usually a tick that shows up on cold mornings, a spot on the driveway, a little less power going up a hill, or having to add oil more often than you used to.

By the time an engine is loud enough that you cannot ignore it, the repair is usually bigger than it would have been a few months earlier. Getting it looked at while the symptom is still small is what keeps the bill down.

What YBE Checks and Repairs

We narrow it down before we open anything up. Where is the noise coming from, does it change with engine speed or with road speed, does it get better or worse as the engine warms up. Those answers separate a top-end noise from a bottom-end noise from something that is not the engine at all.

Depending on the symptom we test compression and cylinder leak-down, check oil pressure, look for external and internal leaks, examine spark and fuel delivery on a misfiring cylinder, and inspect belts, mounts and accessories that can imitate an engine noise.

Some engine problems are straightforward repairs: gaskets, seals, sensors, timing components, cooling-related damage. Others are serious enough that we will tell you honestly what the vehicle is worth putting into.

Common Warning Signs

  • Knocking, ticking or tapping that changes with engine speed
  • Blue, white or black smoke from the exhaust
  • Losing oil without an obvious leak, or oil spots under the car
  • Noticeable loss of power, especially under load
  • Rough running or a cylinder that is clearly not firing
  • Overheating that keeps coming back after a repair

What This May Include

  • Diagnosis of the specific noise, leak or performance complaint
  • Compression and leak-down testing where the symptom calls for it
  • Oil-pressure and cooling-system checks
  • Gasket, seal and timing-component repair
  • Repair of misfire causes including ignition and fuel-delivery faults
  • An honest assessment when a repair is not worth what the vehicle is worth

Why This Should Not Wait

Engines fail progressively. A leaking gasket lowers the oil level, low oil raises wear, and wear turns into the noise you are hearing now. Each stage costs more than the one before it.

Overheating is the fastest version of this. An engine that has been driven hot even once can develop problems that were not there the day before, which is why we treat a repeating overheat as urgent rather than routine.
