What You May Be Noticing
You press the accelerator and the engine revs higher than it should before the car actually moves. Or the shift that used to be smooth now arrives with a jolt, arrives late, or does not arrive at all until you let off the gas.
That is the transmission telling you it is losing the ability to hold a gear. What we need to find out is why, because the same symptom comes from causes that range from a fluid service to a rebuild.
What YBE Checks and Repairs
We check fluid level and condition first, because it is the fastest thing to rule in or out and it tells us a great deal. Fluid that is dark and smells burnt has been overheating, and that changes what we look at next.
Then we scan for transmission-specific codes and watch live data while driving: commanded gear versus actual gear, input and output shaft speeds, line pressure, and solenoid operation. That comparison is what separates an internal mechanical failure from an electrical or control fault.
Plenty of shift complaints are not the transmission at all. A misfiring engine, a failing speed sensor or a throttle-position fault can all produce shifting that feels wrong. We check those before recommending major work.
Common Warning Signs
- Engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate with them
- Hard, jerky or delayed shifts
- The transmission shifts at much higher speeds than it used to
- A shudder that feels like driving over rumble strips
- Reddish-brown fluid on the ground, or a burnt smell
- Check-engine light along with a shifting complaint
What This May Include
- Fluid level, color and smell assessment
- Transmission-specific code scan and live-data road test
- Solenoid, sensor and line-pressure testing
- Inspection for external leaks at the pan, seals and cooler lines
- Ruling out engine-side causes of shift complaints
- A clear recommendation: service, repair, rebuild or replace
Why This Should Not Wait
A slipping transmission generates heat, and heat is what destroys the clutches and seals inside it. Every mile driven while it is slipping widens the repair.
It is also the difference between a repair and a replacement. A solenoid caught early is a manageable job. The same fault left alone until the fluid is burnt usually is not.
